The Desert

"I think the American West really attracts me because it's romantic. The desert, the empty space, the drama."

Birds of a Feather

"There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before."

Robert Lynd (1879 - 1949)

The Blue Lion and Other Essays

These are some of my favorite water bird images from the past few years. Many of them were taken at Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert, Arizona and one at Papago Park in Phoenix, Arizona.

At the end of this month, I will be travelling to Sedona, Arizona with some photographer friends to take pictures and meet a new contact who lives in Oak Creek.  A picnic and a photo adventure awaits us in one of the most beautiful landscapes in Arizona.

Skull Shadow

When I was visiting friends of my parents in Oracle, Arizona back in June 1998, I found this skull on the back of their home.  It was luck that I had decided to walk into their back yard to view some of the other art that they had on display.  When I turned around, I saw this perfect shadow being cast from the skull.

Papago Park

January 3, 2014

Papago Park on a cool January afternoon, is the place to be for bird watching, photographing and fishing. It is June 19 now and I am longing for those cooler temperatures.  We have a long, hot summer ahead of us here in the Valley of the Sun.  Plans are in the works for a trip up north to Sedona where beautiful scenery, the company of photographer friends and a new friend to be will be enjoyed.

June

The sun is rich

and gladly pays

In golden hours

Silver days

And long green weeks

That never end

School's out

The time is ours to spend

There's Little League

Hopscotch, the creek,

And after supper

Hide and seek

The live-long light

Is like a dream

*Poem from the book "A Child's Calendar" written by John Updike*
