Sunbeams

The monsoon weather in Arizona is in full swing now.  The clouds and light danced around the desert as weather conditions changed throughout the day and evening.  These images were taken before sunset showing the many beams of light in the sky and the light that spread over Piestewa Peak and a portion of the McDowell Mountains today, August 2, 2014.

Sunbeam:
Poem by Anna Akhmatova
23 June 1889 - 5 March 1966 / Odessa

I pray to the sunbeam from the window -
It is pale, thin, straight.
Since morning I have been silent,
And my heart - is split.
The copper on my washstand
Has turned green.
But the sunbeam plays on it
So charmingly.
How innocent it is, and simple,
In the evening calm,
But to me in this deserted temple
It's like a golden celebration
And a consolation.

My Journey as a Photographer

Looking back at the way I became interested in photography has made me realize how lucky I have been to have had two father's who were influential in my upbringing.  At age ten, I received my first point and shoot film camera in 1960 from my father, Dave Ryan. I took some pictures with it while visiting Rome, Italy for a sixth month stay with my family. My step-father, JohnHuggler, a composer and jazz musician,  had received his first of two Guggenheim Grants. The next camera was another point and shoot until I graduated in 1968 from Lexington High School in Lexington, Massachusetts.

My father, Dave, was the first to recognize the value of photography, having taken darkroom instruction from the prominent photo-journalist of that time, W. Eugene Smith in New York City. After my father, Dave, moved to Japan, he sent me my first good 35 mm camera, the Asahi Pentax. It didn't have a light meter, so I purchased one and started on my journey by learning the basics of setting f. stops and shutter speed according to the light meter's recommendations. From those beginnings, I had the Asahi Pentax, Chinon, a Canon A-1 and then the Nikon 8008s film camera and a Bronica GS-1 medium format. In 2006, I got my first digital camera and after having two other digital cameras, I traded John's old Nikon camera system for a Nikon D300.

My father, John, became interested in photography, as well. He had the opportunity to meet Ansel Adams during one of our summer vacations driving through California. My mother, Mardean and my father, John, were both very supportive of me pursuing photography and had given me several of Ansel Adam's photography books.

When I moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona in 1977, I became more involved with photography by contributing to the local newspaper, and my photos were published in local magazine publications. I, also, took a  taking a darkroom class at the community college which led to a job at the newspaper.

In 1997, I moved to Mesa, Arizona where I have become very active with photography Meetup groups. I am out as often as possible taking pictures of the subjects that interest me most. I enjoy many subjects such as landscapes, desert flora, birds, abstracts in nature and abstracts in architecture. Please visit my website to see the variety of images that are for sale. The link to my website is www.tamryan.com.

This is a Father's Day tribute to both of my father's (and my mother, of course) who have been very influential in helping me develop my interest in photography. It has been the passion of my life to learn more about photography and to pursue the next image that inspires me.

Through the Magical Mists of Time

"A horse is the projection of peoples' dreams about themselves - strong, powerful, beautiful - and it has the capability of giving us escape from our mundane existence."  - Pam Brown

There is something very special about walking on the same ground where these Wild Horses roam along The Salt River in Arizona.  Through the magical mists of time, these majestic wild horses have sparked our imaginations and have shown us the way to true freedom.

Monsoon Magic

“Rain clouds come floating in, not to muddy my days ahead, but to make me calm, happy and hopeful.”

-  rajuda

The stormy weather is here for a couple of months here in the Valley of the Sun.  Phoenix and the outlying areas are experiencing sand storms, thunder and a nice show of lightning adorning the skies.  I look forward to this time of year, despite the hotter temperatures.  The clouds make for some very dramatic photography for sunsets and storms in the Arizona desert! It is a magical time of year when we photographers go storm chasing.  Here are a few of my images of the monsoon weather and sunsets.

A Flowering Bud - poem by Tam Ryan

During many of my visits to the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona, there have been many beautiful spring flowers and cactus flowers in bloom.  This is one of many favorite images that I have photographed.

Off and on, since I was a youngster and through my adulthood, I have written a few poems over the years. The influence, I'm sure, came from my mother, who was a poet.  I will share some of my other poems in the future from time to time.

Birds of a Feather

"There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before."

These are some of my favorite water bird images from the past few years. Many of them were taken at Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert, Arizona and one at Papago Park in Phoenix, Arizona.

When I was visiting friends of my parents in Oracle, Arizona back in June 1998, I found this skull on the back of their home.  It was luck that I had decided to walk into their back yard to view some of the other art that they had on display.  When I turned around, I saw this perfect shadow being cast from the skull.

Papago Park

January 3, 2014

Papago Park on a cool January afternoon, is the place to be for bird watching, photographing and fishing. It is June 19 now and I am longing for those cooler temperatures.  We have a long, hot summer ahead of us here in the Valley of the Sun.  Plans are in the works for a trip up north to Sedona where beautiful scenery, the company of photographer friends and a new friend to be will be enjoyed.

June

The sun is rich
and gladly pays

In golden hours
Silver days

And long green weeks
That never end

School's out
The time is ours to spend

There's Little League
Hopscotch, the creek,

And after supper
Hide and seek

The live-long light
Is like a dream
